CT housing dept. lands $16.2M in COVID-19 relief funding

Connecticut’s housing department has been awarded $16.2 million in federal funding to provide immediate and long-term services for residents negatively impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak.

The Connecticut Department of Housing (DOH) on Monday said the money recently approved by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) marks its first tranche of federal funding from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. Congress passed the bipartisan bill, which provides $2 trillion in stimulus funding, in late March.

DOH says it will use the CARES Act funding, in part, to make interim improvements on private properties to allow residents to remain quarantined on a temporary basis. It will also be spent to supply COVID-19 test diagnosis and other equipment and services at certain testing sites.

Other uses include:

  • Delivering meals on wheels to quarantined individuals or others that need to maintain social distancing due to medical vulnerabilities
  • Expanding rapid rehousing
  • Expand the agency’s ongoing efforts to relocate homeless individuals from hotels to permanent housing
  • Establishing an eviction prevention program
  • Telehealth services

DOH Commissioner Seila Mosquera-Bruno in a statement said the funding will help the agency improve its response to the COVID-19 pandemic and develop a long-term strategy to deal with its impact.

“My highest praise goes to our frontline partners that serve the public admirably and remain flexible when adapting to shifting priorities,” Mosquera-Bruno said. “This first tranche of funds will be an added boost to our operations.”

The DOH funding comes more than a week after the state Department of Labor said it received a $2.3 million federal grant to create temporary disaster-relief jobs and training services for workers impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak.
