CSCU to reopen community colleges Monday, universities Aug. 24

The Connecticut State Colleges and Universities system will begin allowing its 12 community colleges to resume in-person courses Monday, and will let residential and commuter students on the campuses of its four universities Aug. 24.

CSCU President Mark Ojakian announced the timeline Friday, in a statement that highlighted precautions and that the state higher education system was acting in concert with Gov. Ned Lamont's administration.

"Based on significant guidance from public health experts and in accordance with Governor Lamont’s ReOpen CT Advisory Committee plan, we have determined that the CSCU colleges and universities will reopen their physical campuses to residential and commuter students," Ojakian said.

Fall semester classes on university and community college campuses will be held on a normal fall schedule between August and Thanksgiving, Ojakian said, but courses will be held remotely between the Thanksgiving break and the end of the semester in December. Arrangements for residential students to move in are unclear.

Community Colleges can hold on-site courses beginning Monday for students who need to complete spring semester courses, and students enrolled in workforce development programs, Ojakian said. 

Specific plans for reopening university campuses will be developed through the summer, Ojakian said, and every school in the system will be prepared to move back to a remote-only setup if public health conditions change.

"Our priority has been and will continue to be the safety of our students, faculty and staff," Ojakian said.
